How we work out what your car is worth
A car at the end of its life has two possible values: what somebody would pay to drive it, and what it is worth as material. Once the first is gone the second is what remains, and that is mostly a question of what the vehicle weighs. It is the same calculation whether you call it a junk car or a scrap car.

A flat price is set by the weight tier the vehicle falls into, and a short, fixed list of deductions comes off it: a missing catalytic converter, all four wheels gone, or a title you have no way of obtaining. That list is complete. There is no deduction for a car that will not start, will not drive, is wrecked, or has no engine left in it, because those are the things that make it a junk car rather than a used one.
That is why the first four questions are always year, make, model and ZIP. Those give us the curb weight and where the truck has to drive, which is most of the answer. It also means a heavier vehicle in poor shape can be worth more than a lighter one in better shape, so if you are comparing offers, compare what is actually being weighed, and check whether the tow is being taken back out of the number. Ours never is.
